About SHSA

What is the Shallenberger Home and School Association (SHSA)? The Schallenberger Home and School Association is a non-profit organization run by parent volunteers to support and enhance our children’s education and experience at Schallenberger.  Similar to a PTA, this organization is different in that we don’t require membership fees from parents or pay fees to a national organization, which leaves more funds available to spend on programs and services for the school.  While there are endless opportunities, the SHSA gathered input from school staff and parents and has focused support on five areas:

  1. Support teachers and a positive school climate
  2. Provide arts enrichment education
  3. Supplement district funding for media and technology
  4. Fund field trip scholarships for students in need
  5. Promote parent and community involvement

What school enrichment programs are supported by SHSA volunteers and funding? Every year, numerous successful programs were supported including:

  • 100% support for art enrichment programs such as Montalvo Arts Center (Teaching Artists),Starting Arts (Music and Theater) and volunteer run Art Vista;
  • supporting teachers and promoting a positive school climate with Recess 101 and Project Cornerstone;
  • supplementing librarian staffing costs to keep the library open for more hours;
  • supplies for classrooms, science projects, media center and computer lab;
  • teacher appreciation events and sponsor participation in Fall Festival and Spring Gala events; and
  • funding scholarships for field trips and 5th Grade Science Camp.

How can parents and family members get involved?

Ongoing commitment.  There are several open volunteer positions for the current school year — please contact a SHSA Board member if you are interested or have any questions about the roles.  Even if you can offer partial help, it would be useful and appreciated.

Short-term commitment. SHSA hosts two major annual events — the Fall Festival & Walk-a-Thon (October 16, 2015) and Spring Gala (March 5, 2016)  that always need help with event planning, auction or volunteer coordination, event day volunteer shifts.  Consider reserving time to volunteer to support those events.

Classroom Help. Your child’s teacher may be seeking a classroom volunteer, either in or out of the classroom.   Be sure to let them know you are interested in helping.

Before you volunteer for the first time on campus, be sure to follow Schallenberger’s volunteer guidelines. How can parents and family members contribute financially?

Set it and forget it.

    • Target REDCard. Apply for it once and link it to Schallenberger.  Then use it at Target and Target.com to receive 5% off and free shipping.  Target donates 1% of your REDcard purchases to Schallenberger.   Close family members can do this too.
    • AmazonSmile.  Just bookmark and use this special link to Amazon (also on the right column banner) to start your Amazon shopping trips and Amazon will donate 0.5% from eligible AmazonSmile purchases. No program to sign up for!   (More info)

Go to a party or two.  SHSA hosts two annual social events that together raise over half of our target fundraising goal.

Eat dinner out.  About once a month, SHSA hosts a Restaurant Night where a portion of the sales are donated to Schallenberger.

Collect BoxTops.  Kids love this activity, it is like a scavenger hunt!

Lower your taxes with a tax-deductible donation.  They are always welcome at any time, of course.
